Hammerstone Road | Manchester
Client: Morgan Sindall / Manchester City Council
We have successfully transformed the Hammerstone Road Depot into a unified, 3.8-acre super-hub for Manchester City Council.
At the heart of this project lies the sensitive refurbishment of the historic 10,000sq.m Beyer Peacock & Co locomotive shed. We breathed new life into this local heritage asset, converting it into modern offices, workshops, and storage while carefully preserving its industrial character.
Beyond the heritage restoration, the site is now future-proofed with impressive sustainability credentials; the introduction of rainwater harvesting and extensive PV panels now generates approximately 80% of the depot’s energy needs.
The project also included the thoughtful restoration of the on-site memorial garden. All works were delivered while the site remained fully operational—a complex logistical challenge involving live railway lines and phased construction that ensured vital council services continued without interruption.
